Lernen Sie Andrea hier kennen.

Used to multicultural environment

“I’m Andrea. I was born and raised in Biella, a small city in northern Italy, which was once known for the excellence of its textile industry whose high-end products and fabrics were exported both nationally and internationally.

As a child, I was constantly immersed in a multicultural environment. My dad and his family had spent many years studying and working in France. When they finally got back home, they took their French cultural background with them and  preserve it as best they could.

Multiculti Deutsche in Melbourne: unser Praktikant kommt aus Italien
I can still remember my dad talking to my grandma in French when they were discussing something I wasn’t supposed to be hearing and the effort I used to put in making out what they were saying.

Passion for European languages & cultures

Milan ist die Heimatstadt von unserem neuen Deutsche in Melbourne Praktikanten
I believe it’s mainly my curiosity that, from a very young age, pushed me to take every single opportunity I had to study foreign languages and to get more familiar with different from mine. At some point, I realised that I really wanted to dive deeper into it. That’s when I decided to move to Milan to study my Bachelor’s and my Master’s degree in European languages and cultures. Since French and English were no longer enough for me, I chose to go the extra mile and pick up German.
Learning a language from scratch as an adult was a massively challenging journey, but it’s one I’ll never regret embarking on since it opened me the door to a whole new world of beauty!

Goethe, Schiller, Fontane, Hesse and many others soon became my most beloved travel buddies. Meanwhile, ridiculously long compound words such as Donaudampfschifffahrtselektrizitätenhauptbetriebswerkbauunterbeamtengesellschaft finally started to make sense to my Italian ear!

Joining Deutsche in Melbourne from Italy

It is the love for those words and for German culture at large that led me to apply for a work placement at Deutsche in Melbourne! I was thrilled at the idea of writing for an online magazine with multiculturality at its core! I will do my best to help you navigate through the various aspects of your Australian life and I really hope I can be a valuable remote guide!

Speaking of remote: did I mention that I will be working remotely from Milan? Just as Melbourne, Milan had to adopt strict lockdown measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19. For months, people have been forced to stay inside their homes all day. I know how hard that can be, but I think every single one of us can learn a lot from this situation.

Deutsch und italienisch
Personally, I tried to alleviate my time at home by catching up on books and series I hadn’t had time to read or watch before (Yes, Netflix had me). I also had the chance to reflect on my life and on the path I want to go down in the near future. That might be something you could do.

Lessons from lockdown in Milan

Das Leben ist ein Fluss in Melbourne
Getting past moments of crisis is never easy and you might feel overwhelmed. But, if you think about it, dark moments can also offer new opportunities. And if you find a new beginning a little scary, just keep in mind this beautiful excerpt from Stages (Stufen) by Hermann Hesse: “In all beginnings dwells a magic force
For guarding us and helping us to live.”
